No, not necessarily because of our 'choices'.... but because of  DEVELOPMENT 
and where the work centers have been placed.  Our booming  population and 
industrialization over the last hundred years have separated work  centers from 
residential centers.  Try to find ONE person in the entire  country who prefers 
(or would prefer) to commute a long distance from home  to get to work.  No 
one wants that, because we lose TIME.  However,  that's just how it is.  Zoning 
rules and economics, i.e.Purchasing large  areas of former rural farmland for 
industrial or office space, are what have  contibuted to our dependence on 
private transportation.   
No matter how much we love the automobile, we really don't want to spend  
much time in traffic.
