We "need" to drive because of our choices. Before there were automobiles and airplanes and cheap fuel people did live near their work centers. That is my point exactly. Jim No, not necessarily because of our 'choices'.... but because of DEVELOPMENT and where the work centers have been placed. Our booming population and industrialization over the last hundred years have separated work centers from residential centers. Try to find ONE person in the entire country who prefers (or would prefer) to commute a long distance from home to get to work. No one wants that, because we lose TIME. However, that's just how it is. Zoning rules and economics, i.e.Purchasing large areas of former rural farmland for industrial or office space, are what have contibuted to our dependence on private transportation. No matter how much we love the automobile, we really don't want to spend much time in traffic. Jerry aka LGO **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.
