the whining sound could be the alternator bearing on the pulley,  or the 
differential.  My guess is that something is too tight or dry  when cold, then 
gets lubed or expands in the heat, quieting the noise.  New  belts are 
sometimes 
overtightened when put on the alternator and drive pulleys,  and this puts 
pressure on the pulley bearings and may actually cause them to  wear 
prematurely. 
 Proper alignment is necessary between alternator pulley  (or other items 
using pulleys) and the drive pulley.
