I did a "poor man's reroute" on my Miata using a tee to tie the water from the back of the head into the upper radiator hose and blocking off the mixing manifold. I didn't change the location of the stock thermostat. Below you will find a diagram of the reroute and a not very good picture of where the tee is located:
