Thanks for the info!

Looks like from the MPG responses that my car is about right, I
underestimated the expected MPG and the later sub's with bigger motor and in
some cases auto trans, would deliver about the same or almost same gas
mileage!

Can I find an AWD solution of any kind, that gets closer to 30?  Havent
found it yet!

So far, for $1600 I like the sub though...

I drove  '98 Impreza wagon with a very similar 2.2l and 5-speed, and I
averaged 24-25 mpg in mixed driving, and 28 or so on the interstate.

It was a great car, very stout.  Just don't panic when missing a 1-2 shift
while trying to climb out of the mud.  2nd gear can be ground down in a
heartbeat ;)
