Traditionally underground pipes are PVC, not metal, therefore the pipes don't conduct electricity... plus factor in the air in the pipe around the wires, insulation of the wire.. and the fact that they are buried in true earth ground. Not sure I believe that one. If it IS true, were does lightning go after it enters the earth/dirt? It would all still be travelling around in the dirt... 'somewhere'.... until it dissipated into... something.
I have heard a weird story relating to cows being killed due to stray
voltage because of difference in potential on grounds between poles.. no
clue if it was true, but the premise was that the ground at pole A was
better than the ground at pole B, and the cows near pole B were being
electrocuted because the voltage-to-ground at B was trying to travel thru
the earth to pole A. Ground potential causes electricity to travel across
a ground.. personally seen it in a large pair count telephone wire strung
between an office and a shop on a campus (maybe 150' apart), the voltage
was so high it was melting the pairs of wires in the cable.. something on
order of 40+V travelling from one building to the other because the ground
in the shop was a less resistive ground. (this is why you only ground one
end of the cable, folks!!).
Electricity is weird... just look at how lightning moves thru the air in
seemingly random patterns.

someone recently told me that underground cables (of all sorts), get "hit"
by lightening more often because they are surrounded by "ground"...is this
true?
