It's got advantages too.  When paired with a sophisticated ECU, it can
smooth out the torque curve on a turbocharged car at partial throttle by
opening the throttle wider initially to spool up the turbo, then closing
it back down as the boost comes up.

It also makes cruise control much smoother than any cable-based
system.
