forward: I thought this msg was private so i answered it privately...the
msg to the list arrived after i sent my response to Raj so here is my reply
with an additional comment here.

in the most matter of fact non-pissy tone possible
i think i am ignorant rather than stupid, ignorance came be fix as i am
trying to do here.
stupid is another matter altogether :)
thanks ,

heh, heh, heh, who me :)
i am one of the few people who appreciate direct commemts. thank you

just a bit of my history:
my tool set while not complete, has grown to include ASE & metrics, (1/4,
3/.8 1/2"). including socket sets (short and deep, 6 and 12 point) ,
wrenches , flat/phillips/torx drivers, impacts (mostly shorts, gun and
ratchet and speciality tools) , ft/lb and newton torque wrench, taps/dies,
eays-outs, ratchet wrenches. timing lite, vac gauge, special big tools,
rarely used but nice to have, floor jack, jack stands,
fellers/calipers/micrometer

i have progressively done more to cars/engines over the last 30 years...
started with tune ups and brakes, water pumps, shocks etc for a lomg time.
7 years ago, i pulled a motor out of a1968 mustang (i have had several)
and replaced it with a 351W with the machine shop rebuilding the emtire
thing. i also replaced the tranny with an AOD unit. that was the most I had
done at the time...(SIDEBAR:in 2000, i was hit by a car on my 1998 Triumph
motorcycle w/ my kid, (he landed on me so he was ok) and had to install the
power train with a broken wrist, coller bone and extensive soft tissue
damage to a shoulder This incident, ruined my career as a UNIX dev'r team
lead with a MS/CS from RPI...I have lots of time now :). 3 or 4 years ago,
the head gasket on my 96 bonnieville popped. I replaced it twice before
giving up and selling it still blown. i later realized the head needed to
be decked or planed or what ever the correct term is. it wasnt that much a
lose as the car had 150k on it...but I did like that car...sayla vee! (
SIDEBAR: the car was never re-registered and was later used in a hit and
run. they traced it back to me...i had learned to have 2 copies of the bill
of sale and to keep the phone numbers of the people who buy stuff from me).

my next step was this car...i pulled the power train out last year due to
increasing smoke, stripped it to a short block which i had the machine shop
rebuild for me as I am not confident enough to do ...yet :). i had this car
from 26k miles, (with the JR/SC already installed) until now with 114k ( i
pulled the powertain at 112K, had the bottom end rebuilt, head done and SC
rebuilt2k is with this problem, the car ran fine for that time and I
replaced everything correctly as I had a "real" mechanic checking on me. my
brother is also a formally trained mechanic (at Denver diesel amd auto), (he
does the old brit stuff, ugh i had a couple bikes and a 63 rhd mini , i
forgot about them when we got the miata in 2000 post accident)

You are correct that my understanding of troubleshooting is weak...I learn
best by doing i am confident my mechanical ability is ok but my diagonstics
leave something to be desire, hence, my questions to the list

if you think this is bad, my early bikes/cars suffered more...imagine
trying to take out coil springs with crorw bars and screw drivers. i whacked
the (*&^ out of my thumb nail. i have a spring compressor now

just the very basics in that i understand what it is doing but not how

With that said, rebuilding the internals of a motor with less than common

yes agreed, I have not done that yet...this maybe the time...I am concerned
about the vital tolerance measurements........i am sure i will have someone
help me with that....lets see.

already has :), but i think the most painful time is over (ha, ha, ha!)

i got the "new" motor off this list...it had bottom/top end, oil pan and oil
pump. i was not going to open the motor but it turned out well that i did
as there is some rust on 2 dyl walls, (i got a cyl hone yeaterday, (for
every task, i get at least one new tool :), and will determine what to do
after seeing if the rust is more than surface.

I think the biggest issue is the driver rather than the mechanic, I should
not have driven it until i figured the problem of fuel/ign out .

that is what i was trying with the "new" motor

i will try to forget them but i doutb i will ever be able to :))

I really do appreciate you comments and concern...and your private msg i am
sure others think the same :) sometimes the only way to do it is to do it
and make mistakes...sometime i will tell you about my first motorcycle ride
of over 1,000 miles in under 24 hours...now that was painful see
IronButt.com if you are interested)

again thanks,
peter in ct et tu?
