it should just slide off. if it's old/been driven in winter sometimes there is 
rust. You can pull the key then you can sometimes rotate the gear on the crank 
and it will come off (try some grips and a rag). 
 
you can also GENTLY pry with a couple small screw drivers on both sides, 
usually at 3 and 9 oclock. watch out, too much and you will break the very 
outer edges of the gear off (I'd know). 
 
Spray it with blaster first or whatever you have around.

hi,i looked into getting a jy motor fro my 95 but after seeing prices upward of 
$900 with kinda high miles, i decided to have my motor reworked.  I was hoping 
to get the short block to the shop this after noon but i forget how to extract 
the lower timing gear from the crank to remove the oil pump.  The manual does 
not elabroate beyond :remove in the order shown"  ...any hints? thanks,peter--
