Not when you have an immobilizer and need the key to make it work.

Last time I lost a key, they made me replace the ECU and Keys to the tune of
$600.00. Guess it depends on the dealership you go to or the year of the

I had the same issue with my 2004 MSM. Cutting the key isn't the issue. It
is the programming of the electronics. In fact, I am not even sure there is
any actual physical cutting done. It seems that if you have 2 keys, then a
third can be reprogrammed quite simply - but you need 2 "originals"

If you have lost one of them you must go through the entire process. The
pricing is quite exorbitant. I asked why $95 to program it and was told that
"it had to be done by the computer and would take an hour." Like sure! Slow
computer? Basically it is like reprogramming an EPROM and done through the
diagnostic port computer.

So - if you only have 2 keys - then have a third done immediately! It is
much cheaper to do in that you only have to pay for the blank - about $25.
And you can probably do it yourself actually.

I had also lost the key fob for keyless entry. For THAT they wanted $196!
But THAT I was able to pick up off of Ebay for $16. Actually I bought 2!
There are instructions available in the Net for reprogramming that.

So I was, in that way, able to minimize my cost to Mazda to about $120 I
believe.

Any truly RESPONSIBLE dealership SHOULD inform you of the advisability of
making a third key when you pick up your new automobile. Most of us have to
learn the hard way.
