The last time I saw a mystery box like that, it had JACKSON RACING on the top. Made no difference to the car when I removed it. Never did figure it out.

Three possibilities (and maybe 4): It MAY have been a signal and power/ground connection for an aftermarket fog or driving light, or something similar for a water injection or radiator/intercooler spray, or even a car alarm.. Have you opened the mystery box? It may contain a relay or series of relays (disconnect the power and hold the brake pedal down for a few seconds before attempting to open the mystery box).
