It shouldn't be hotter than the rest of the trunk unless you were cranking 
the engine over with it right before you felt the temp.  Today everything in 
my trunk was hot!   If  the rest of the trunk was cool, then perhaps the 
voltage regulator died and if so the battery won't last long, but keeping 
the headlights on will help quite a bit.  If you have working electric 
headlight motors you can disconnect them and manually turn the lamps 
downward a few degrees.  That will allow you to keep the high beams on for 
maximum effect.
