Here's a suggestion, the JBL GTO series coaxial speakers DO fit behind the
stock grilles. I used a set before I bought Focals.

If you look at some of the various speakers, some protrude, some do
ot. The pioneer speakers from walmart seem to be relatively flush
ompared to others and fit behind the stock grills.

tell me about it, they sounded funny and when I popped the grills off, the
 cardboard fell onto the rug.

so i was actually given a set of alpine speakers, about 6" and they wouldnt
fit flush enough to snap the miata speaker trim/grille covers over.

how do you go in with larger speakers and have them fit?

Your original speakers are certainly shot. Replace them (and headrest
 speakers)..

Go to Walmart or other discount store and pickup a set of 6.5"
speakers for about $50-70. Pioneer, Sony, etc. Also, add headrest
speakers. 3.5" rounds will fit in the headrests. Cheap ones are fine.
Make a wiring harness if you do not have one.

There is not much reason to go much more expensive in a noisy
convertible. You will be amazed at the difference over the worn out
 speakers.
