Similar location to the noise mine made when the crankshaft pulley key had sheared - is there any visible wobble on the pulley at idle, and can you feel a knocking through the gear level? Glenn

It has 125K on it. I have developed a knocking noise that is loudest at the front right (as standing in front) valve / timing belt cover. I have listened all over the engine and can hear all the bearings, they sound normal. I thought it might be the timing belt, as I do not know when it was changed last. After pulling the valve cover, front covers. I found the timing belt looks good. The middle cover was not installed correct and had been rubbing on the timing belt (no damage to the belt and just marks on the cover). I checked the tension /idler bearings and they appear to be fairly new. The spring seams to be weak as when I went to retention the belt it was not to specifications. After using my padded pry bar to gently persuade the tension farther. I got it within specks at the end of the tension travel. Is this normal on this engine? Does this indicate the timing belt needs to be replaced? Thank You Bruce
