True, but when I did the FC I had the funds for a iron block LT1 ($500) vs the aluminum block LSx motors ($2500+).. so that's what went in. It only saves maybe 200 pounds if you go with the alum. over iron, so even so that puts the FC at 2950-3000 vs. the Miata at 2600ish.. and you can feel that weight. Could my FC be set up better to minimize that weight gain? Probably, but I doubt it will even feel like the go-kart that the Sub is.
Sad? Nah.. it's all about perspective. The car is as far (or almost as far) as it can go with the original 1.6, if it is to continue progressing, a motor swap is the next logical step.. even if it was to a 1.8/2.0 the Sub is no longer "original". I've put 65k miles on it since I bought it back in 2003 (129k on the clock), and I truly enjoy it otherwise I wouldn't be using it as the platform for a V8 car. The goal is to have a super clean, super fun swap. Cleaning up the leftovers of many years of hard driving, and FM development and underwater storage (and that one off track incident a few years ago!).. Repainting the car all one color of Sunburst yellow (instead of the 3 shades it is now), and taking care\ of some of the nagging issues that it has had for a while. I'm excited to take the car to the next level, and it should be fun! IIRC it doesn't need to weigh that much more if you go with an aluminum block and heads. The Yellow Submarine has a long and storied past. Always a groundbreaking car it's kind of sad to see it go to an LS conversion, but then again it will be a groundbreaking conversion! On 11/03/2010 09:43 AM, [email protected] wrote: Thanks Curtis! I'm totally geeked! Updates will follow, along with plenty of FS posts sprinkled in as parts come off the car. :) I've enjoyed the FC RX7's but they are so big and heavy compared to the Miata and when I drive them back to back, it is grossly evident. The power is sweet, the power top is nice, and I like the wind characteristics of the 7 better, but it is heavy and feels very heavy driving it. Weighed the Sub yesterday, full tank of gas, rollbar, FM2 kit, stereo gear with 2 amps and fiberglass sub box, Racing beat body kit and Simpson cowl hood it came in at 2480 pounds without driver. Figure the LS swap adds 150-200 pounds, it's still going to be significantly lighter than the RX7 which (FC convertible) is 3150 without driver with the LT1 in it. It's going to be a journey, shopping for a plasma/TIG combo right now... Wallyman, That’s awesome! I’m so very happy for you and for the Sub. Please keep us posted on the powerlist, even if it’s only a link to your threads on ls1tech every now and then. Powered that is! http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1349121-yellow-submarine-goes-nuclear-ls2-t56-miata.html The entire drivetrain will be going up for sale as soon as I can get my ducks in a row on it. Need to do a compression check before it gets pulled, video tape it, and catalog all the mods since there is a lot and I forget them all. So, if you know someone looking for a rock solid 225rwhp 1.6l FM2 turbo setup on a fairly built motor with 95% of the stuff needed to make it complete (full exhaust, cooling system, water injection system, tranny, diffy), this may be the thing for them. More details to follow as I get it cataloged and figure out a price. Going to try and sell it complete to start with, since all you really need is a fuel pump and a car to stuff it into. If that doesn't go, I'll look at parting it out or maybe buy a car and stuff it in there to sell (I hate that idea tho!) This is what happens when you let me play with V8's and engine swaps. :) Wallyman _______________________________________________ Miatapower mailing list [email protected] http://list.miatapower.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/miatapower
