I have a 95 1.8l which is mostly stock in addition to my modded turbo
1.6.

Recently I remanned the head and cleaned up all of the carbon from the
piston tops and combustion chambers. Everything was immaculate on
reassembly.

While the head was off I also took advantage of the opportunity to blend
the transitions from the intake and exhaust runners to the valve seats,
in addition to port matching the stock exhaust manifold.

The car runs great, and makes significantly more torque everywhere. The
ignition timing is advanced slightly over stock, only 2 degrees. Even
running 89 octane I have noticed knocking around 2500-3500 rpms when
gently climbing hills. The knocking is easy to drive around by just
selecting a shorter gear and getting the revs up.

Is there anything easily tunable on the stock ECU without breaking CARB
rules to address this problem? Is it a known issue? I can't tell if
it's due to ignition timing or fueling, but running 91 octane seems to
eliminate the problem. The car runs great in all other conditions,
there doesn't seem to be a vac leak or anything like that. The
injectors have never been cleaned so I'm inclined to send those out to
be serviced.

If I were the only person driving the car, it would not be much of an
issue. But my significant other drives this car daily and she is not
so much of a gear head, and drives through San Francisco every day, so
hills and thus knocking are probably a regular occurence.

Any input appreciated!
