I'm not sure about a 2001 Miata but many (if not all) auto makers don't flash the keys ... they update the ECU to accept the new key which has a unique-in-the-world ID installed at the time of manufacture. My wife's car allows the owner to add a new key by following a procedure in the user manual (not shop manual) with another known-good key in hand. Higher-end cars like a Mini require a dealer with a programming machine to do it.

Subject: replacement switch key

2001 Miata LS

Does anyone know of a reliable source for chip type switch keys?

I have the original code number tag for my car, so I think I should be able to get a key flashed without having the car there.

Anyone have better intelligence on this?

Thanks
