Newer cars got better synchros (think 94). NB boxes will only fit two of
the three starter bolts, but doesn't seem to matter. If you get a newer
one, make sure you get the shifter, too, they went to two pins on the
ball on later boxes.

Fully interchangeable

I think it's something like 94 and up are a little different but for the
most part they are all the same.

Subject: Transmission question

Well, my tired old 5 speed finally quit on me. 3rd gear went to bits
tonight under full load. With 175k miles and a bunch of turbo / track
abuse, I can't complain. My question is regarding the differences
between the NA and NB 5 speed. Does anyone know if they are
interchangeable and if there are reasons to prefer one over the other?

Thanks!

-Shaun
