IIRC there was a synchro upgrade in '95 or '96 ? But in any case the main shaft gears are usually poorly/carelessly aligned (longitudinally) with the cluster gears. The result is less-than-full-length contact between the teeth so the maximum possible strength isn't there. Mazda thinks this is just fine since the trans was designed for a V6 RWD sedan and is being used in a much smaller, lighter, less-powerful vehicle. The original design strength can usually be restored by re-shimming the gears on the main shaft to align them properly. I doubt that there are any of the old RWD sedans around (most of the cars imported here had automatics) but if you're lucky enough to find one it would be a much better donor vehicle since their trannys were assembled to a much tougher spec.

I believe 94 and later are a little better for things like not getting stuck
in reverse. None are stronger.

Go to Miata.net and check the used parts guys. There are a bunch of them
there.

None that I'm aware of.

Are there any differances between the early and late model year
transmissions?

Are there model years that are beefier to handle extra engine torque?

Thanks...Steve
