It is a very low mileage car, so my guess is that he is using the OEM keys.

That makes me wonder if he's tried the other key. Unlike me, he likely has both sets : (

Since you are a Miata man I am going to tell you our Miata issue.  Something is wrong with it Tom says it’s the immobilizer (whatever that is).  He will go to get in it in the garage and it will not start or he may have driven it somewhere and go to get in it and it will not start.  Some kind of light comes up and  says it’s the immobilizer. He said it does not recognize the key.  He can probably explain this better than I.  It’s a 2001 SE Miata.  Tom said he does not want a car he can’t trust or depend on.  Have you heard about it, no about a fix or ???
