I had a heat induced problem with the Miata Friday on my drive home from work.

Sudden loss of power and check engine light put me over on the shoulder. The car had no power and wouldn't respond to accelerator activity at all. On the flat it pulled itself in a lurching motion, but bucked until it stalled trying to go up any grade. After sitting a bit and shutting down the AC and other power accessories it was restored to normal running. I got most of the way home when it happened again. Again I had to let it sit a spell and chill. Then drove home.

Saturday morning I followed some sage advice and ordered a set of wires and a coil at Advance. Then I went on to the concours judges meeting without problem. When that was over I went to a friend's shop and he read the code — Cam Position Sensor A and Accelerator Position were the two codes it had recorded.

He said he'd never seen that code, but thought it would be easy to find the part, so off we charged (in his Sunbeam/Talbot). ORiley's didn't have one, so we went to the local dealership. They didn't have one, but ordered one for us. We then went to Advance and scored a new sensor for about $70 shop price. After a burger and shake we dropped it in and the car hasn't missed a beat since.

It seems 2001 and later with the VIC system has a known history of heat soak problems with this sensor. I found this interesting thread about the problem. I'm sure it would have seemed much worse if my car had forced induction. Alas, I have that going for me : (

So if any of you with 2001+ models find yourself on the side of the road with a bucking wimp, spit on the cam position sensor to cool it and find yourself a FLAPS. (oh, I had to pay in advance for the coil and wires, so I can't cancel the order, but have to wait for them to arrive so I can return them) - Roseann Rosanadana was right!
