You gotta love lawyers. It was a legal transaction: "We'll sell you info that could ruin your carreer...or we'll sell it elsewhere & ruin your career."
On reflection, however, it IS an interesting strategy, actually helped by the fact that the money was paid in the form of a check. Wouldn't a blackmailer demand cash?
