1997 – Elvis Presley Enterprises of Memphis, Tennessee, loses its
Court of Appeal battle to stop London trader Sid Shaw from using the
name of “The King” on souvenirs he sells in his shop, Elvisly Yours,
after a 17 year court battle. Speaking after the ruling, Mr. Shaw
said, "I'm delighted. I've proved that Elvis belongs to all of us -
Elvis is part of our history, part of our culture.”
2004 – Ray Davies receives the CBE (Commander of the British Empire)
medal from Queen Elizabeth II.
2004 – Former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler is injured when the
Honda motorbike he’s riding is involved in a collision with a Fiat
Punto car. The 53-year-old singer and guitarist suffers a broken
collar bone and six broken ribs in the accident which happens in
London's smart Belgravia district in mid-morning traffic.
2004 – Courtney Love bares her breasts (ala Drew Barrymore) six times
on The Late Show With David Letterman. Later in the evening she does a
surprise gig at The Plaid club in Manhattan, where she injures an
audience member by throwing a microphone stand.
2006 – Michael Jackson lays off all of his employees and closes
Neverland Ranch.
2006 – The Smiths turn down a $5 million offer to reform for the
Coachella music festival in the U.S.
2008 – Heather Mills is awarded $48.6 million in her divorce from Paul
McCartney. She is now broke.
