Poor kid. Like John Cowsill (current BB's drummer), he had his greatest success around the age of puberty. Cowsill mentions this (apparently frustrating..."thank you, God") fact a couple times in that Vater Drum interview on YouTube.
I guess it's the kid actor thing, too.
