1926 – The Radio Corporation of America, RCA, launches its new radio 
network, the National Broadcasting Company, soon to be known simply as NBC.

1954 – Elvis Presley, along with Scotty Moore and Bill Black, appear on the 
back of a flat-bed truck in the parking lot of Lamar-Airways Shopping 
Center in Memphis for their grand opening. In the audience is Johnny Cash, 
who meets Presley after the show.

1955 – The J.P. Seeburg Corporation introduces their Dual Music System Jukebox, 
the first to hold a hundred singles.

1956 – Elvis Presley makes his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on 
CBS-TV. Sullivan is recovering from a car accident, so actor Charles 
Laughton is the host. Presley’s gyrations are broadcast across America, and 
the show is a smash.

1956 – While Elvis is performing on CBS, The Ted Mack Amateur Hour airs on 
ABC-TV, broadcast from Madison Square Garden, and features Johnny Burnette 
and The Rock and Roll Trio performing “Hound Dog.” The group goes on to win 
the contest.

1957 – The Diamonds perform “Zip Zip” on American Bandstand.

1964 – Murray the K’s Big Holiday Show takes place at the Fox Theatre in 
Brooklyn, featuring The Supremes, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Dusty 
Springfield, The Temptations, The Ronettes, Martha and The Vandellas,  The 
Contours, The Searchers, Jay and The Americans, The Dovells, The 
Shangri-Las, Little Anthony and The Imperials and Millie Small.

1967 – The Doors appear at the Village Theater - soon to become Fillmore 
East - in New York City.

1967 – Fans unable to get tickets and left standing outside begin to riot 
at a sold-out Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich concert in Bergen, 
Norway.

1967 – Sam and Dave release their single, “Soul Man” b/w “May I Baby” on

1968 – The Beatles record their fourth and final version of “Helter

1971 – Led Zeppelin appears at the Hampton Rhodes Coliseum in Virginia.

1973 – Todd Rundgren records the audience singing one of his new songs, 
"Sons Of 1984," during his concert at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, 
only to have police disrupt the crowd during the performance in order to 
arrest a pot dealer. A riot breaks out, and eleven more concertgoers are 
arrested.

1974 – Neil Sedaka records “Laughter In The Rain” and “Endlessly” at Clover 
Recording Studios in Hollywood.

1975 – Wings begin their Wings Over The World Tour at the Gaumont Theatre 
in Southampton.

1977 – David Bowie appears on Marc Bolan’s ITV show, Marc, dueting with 
Bolan on “Heroes” and “Standing Next To You,” which ends suddenly when 
Bolan falls off the stage, much to Bowie’s amusement.

1978 – The Rolling Stones release their single, “Beast Of Burden” b/w “When 
The Whip Comes Down” in the U.S.

1979 – Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) marries Fauzia Mubarak Ali. They 
are still married.

1981 – The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball benefit concert for Amnesty 
International is held at the Drury Theatre in London, featuring Sting, Eric 
Clapton, Phil Collins, Jeff Beck, Bob Geldof, Pete Townshend and others.

1982 – Al Green and Patti LaBelle appear on Broadway in the gospel musical, 
Your 
Arms Too Short To Box With God.

1987 – Pink Floyd begins their A Momentary Lapse Of Reason Tour - their 
first tour without Roger Waters - at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, Ontario, 
Canada.

1992 – Nirvana's Krist Novoselic knocks himself unconscious during the MTV 
Video Music Awards after being hit on the head with his bass guitar after 
throwing it up in the air.

1996 – Tom Petty and his first wife, Jane Benyo, are divorced after 22

2005 – The one hour, commercial free Hurricane Katrina television benefit, 
Shelter From The Storm: A Concert For The Gulf Coast, is simulcast
