1954 – Marty Robbins becomes the first major artist to cover an Elvis
Presley tune when he records the Arthur Crudup composition, "That's All
Right," for Columbia Records. Robbins’ version will become a hit on the
Country music chart.
1956 – Tommy Steele makes his concert debut at Finsbury Park Astoria in
London. Reviews proclaim him "Britain's answer to Elvis."
1956 – Singer Helen O’Connell joins NBC’s The Today Show panel.
1961 – Johnny Cash and June Carter appear on stage together for the first
time at the Big D Jamboree in Dallas, Texas.
1963 – The Beatles give an afternoon concert at the Empire Theatre in
Liverpool, which is filmed for BBC-TV. Following the concert, The Beatles
rush to the Odeon Cinema for a special taping of the BBC-TV program Juke
Box Jury.
1964 – The Birmingham Youth Aliyah Committee presents The Jerry Lee Lewis
Show at the Town Hall in Birmingham, England. The concert is part of Lewis’
first proper UK tour - his first since the marriage scandal that forced him
to cancel his 1958 UK tour. Opening acts on the tour include Gene Vincent,
The Spencer Davis Group, The Ugly’s, The Plebs, and The Londoners.
1964 – Beach Boy Brian Wilson marries Marilyn Rovell in Los Angeles. They
stay married 15 years.
1966 – Nancy Sinatra appears on her father Frank’s CBS special, A Man And
His Music, Part II.
1967 – The Apple Boutique opens its doors for business at 94 Baker Street
in London. The store stays open seven months.
1967 – Otis Redding wraps up his recording of “(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The
Bay” at Stax Studio in Memphis.
1968 – Only days after leaving The Hollies, Graham Nash announces the
formation of Crosby, Stills and Nash.
1968 – Eric Burdon announces that The Animals’ concert in Newcastle on
December 22 will be their last, as they are calling it quits after the show.
1969 – The 5th Dimension, Ferrante & Teicher, Sandler & Young and opera
singer Richard Tucker all appear on The Ed Sullivan Show.
1974 – Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good” debuts on the Billboard Hot 100.
1984 – In a $5 million plagiarism lawsuit, Michael Jackson testifies in a
Chicago courtroom that he did not steal his hit song, "The Girl Is Mine,"
from Illinois songwriter Fred Sanford, who initiated the suit against
Jackson. Michael will eventually win the case.
1985 – Mr. Mister appears as the musical guest on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
1987 – A tribute to Harry Chapin is held at Carnegie Hall on what would
have been the singer’s 45th birthday. Performers include Bruce Springsteen,
Graham Nash, Judy Collins, The Smothers Brothers, Pat Benatar, The Hooters
and others. During the show, Chapin is posthumously awarded the
Congressional Gold Medal for his work in fighting hunger.
1993 – Philip Hall, a guiding force for several British bands, passes away
from cancer at age 34. Hall worked for Stiff Records and guided the careers
of The Manic Street Preachers, The Pogues, The Stone Roses, Radiohead and
others.
1993 – Singer Robert Goulet undergoes prostate cancer surgery in Las Vegas.
1997 – Popes singer Shane McGowan is arrested and jailed in Liverpool for
throwing his mike stand into the audience and injuring a fan. He’s released
on bail the next day.
1998 – Cuban jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval becomes a U.S. citizen after a
six-year battle with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
1999 – The Recording Industry Association of America sues Napster for
$100,000 for each song downloaded from their site.
2003 – R&B singer Mary J. Blige marries her manager, record executive
Martin Isaacs. They are still married.
2005 – The MBE medal that John Lennon returned to the Queen in November
1969 is found in a royal vault at St James' Palace along with the note
Lennon wrote explaining the reason for its return.
2007 – Ray Charles Plaza opens in Albany, Georgia, with a revolving,
lighted bronze sculpture of Charles seated at a piano.
2007 – Singer Rosanne Cash leaves New York’s Presbyterian Hospital and
returns home to recuperate from brain surgery, performed on November 27.
2009 – Bette Midler and Lady Gaga perform for Queen Elizabeth II at the
Royal Variety Performance.
