1928 – Fanny Brice records "If You Want The Rainbow (You Must Have The Rain
)."

1953 – The Oklahoma City Zoo purchases a hippopotamus after receiving 
donations sent in by children spurred on by the novelty single, “I Want A 
Hippopotamus For Christmas,” by 10-year old local resident Gayla Peevey. 
Peevey - who recorded the song along with “Are My Ears On Straight,” with 
Mitch Miller producing in August - performed “I Want A Hippopotamus For 
Christmas” prior to its release on The Ed Sullivan Show in October. The 
song gained instant fame, which led the zoo to take on donations for a 
hippo.

1956 – Alan Freed’s second film, Don’t Knock The Rock, with performances by 
Bill Haley and His Comets, Little Richard, Dave Appel and The Applejacks, 
The Treniers, and Alan Dale, opens in theaters.

1959 – The Ohio State University Research Center issues a report showing 
that rock and roll is the overwhelming favorite music of people aged 14-18. 
However, most over the age of eighteen who were polled considered it their 
least favorite form of music.

1959 – Billboard magazine reports that in the wake of the government's 
payola investigations, the pay-for-play phenomenon is finished, with one 
Philadelphia record distributor complaining, "You can't even buy the disc 
jockeys lunch.”

1961 – Jimmy Dean’s “Big Bad John” is certified gold: the first Country 
music song to ever achieve gold status.

1962 – Bill Wyman makes his live debut with The Rollin' Stones at the Ricky 
Tick Club inside the Star And Garter Hotel in Windsor.

1967 – Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones is rushed to St. Georges 
Hospital in London after collapsing, suffering from over strain and 
recovering from having some teeth pulled out.

1967 – Simon and Garfunkel record “Save The Life Of My Child.”

1968 – Tommy James and The Shondells’ “Crimson And Clover” hits the 
Billboard Hot 100.

1969 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono begin their "Bagism" project, arriving at 
London's Hyde Park inside a white bag inside a white Rolls Royce, and then 
giving a protest speech - from inside the bag - on behalf of executed 
prisoner James Hanratty: the idea being that the press and skeptics would 
have to listen to their words without being distracted by their celebrity.

1969 – The Jackson 5 makes their first network television appearance on The 
Ed Sullivan Show.

1972 – The movie Born To Boogie, starring Marc Bolan, Ringo Starr and David 
Essex, premieres at Oscar's Cinema on Brewer Street in Soho. Bolan, Starr 
and Elton John attend the showing.

1972 – Alexander's department store in New York City stays open late so 
that Alice Cooper, who is wearing silver pants and a "Paul Lives" button, 
can do his Christmas shopping.

1973 – Bruce Springsteen performs at the Pinecrest Country Club in Shelton, 
Connecticut. Not even 200 tickets are sold.

1973 – 14-year old Lorrie Morgan makes her debut appearance at the Grand Ole
 Opry, singing "Paper Roses" at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.

1977 – The disco movie Saturday Night Fever, featuring The Bee Gees 
soundtrack, premieres at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

1980 – A ten-minute worldwide silent vigil is held at 2:00 PM EST at Yoko 
Ono's request for John Lennon. Over 100,000 observe the vigil in New York's 
Central Park, while 30,000 observe the vigil in Liverpool.

1981 – The Police play the first of three nights at the Wembley Arena on 
their Ghost In The Machine Tour.

1985 – Singer James Taylor marries actress Kathryn Walker. They stay 
married ten years.

1986 – Elton John plays the final night of his 23-date Tour De Force tour 
of Australia at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.  The shows were filmed and 
recorded for release.

1992 – Merle Haggard files for bankruptcy. Later in the day, his wife gives

1995 – ABC-TV airs the special, Frank Sinatra: 80 Years My Way, featuring

1995 – Under court order, the FBI grudgingly makes public most of their 
files on John Lennon, after a 12-year battle with University of California 
history professor Jonathan Wiener, who sought the documents which detail 
the Nixon White House investigation into the former Beatle. The FBI is 
allowed to keep 10 “secret” files.

1999 – Paul McCartney returns to the “new” Cavern Club in Liverpool for a 
one-off show, supported by David Gilmour and Mick Green on guitars, Pete 
Wingfield on keyboards, and Ian Paice on drums. The concert is streamed 
live on the Internet.

2000 – Oasis’ Noel Gallagher records a cover of Slade’s “Merry Christmas 
Everybody” for the Christmas Day edition of the BBC comedy series The 
Royale Family, for which Oasis’ “Half The World Away” is the theme song.

2001 – Billy Preston pleads guilty to insurance fraud in a Los Angeles 
court and agrees to testify against six other defendants in the same case. 
Preston receives five years probation, as well as one year in jail to run 
concurrently with a sentence he is already serving for violating probation 
on a prior conviction for cocaine possession.

2004 – The funeral for Damageplan and Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell 
takes place in Arlington, Texas, with Eddie Van Halen placing Darrell’s 
original black and yellow striped guitar into the KISS Kasket he will be 
buried in.

2010 – President Obama names Jon Bon Jovi to the White Council for 
Community Solutions.

2011 – The Troggs’ singer Reg Presley is hospitalized in Winchester, 
England, after having a stroke.

2012 – The upright piano used to play “As Time Goes By” in the 1942 film 
Casablanca sells at a Sotheby’s auction in New York to an unidentified 
buyer for $602,500.
