Peevey - who recorded the song along with “Are My Ears On Straight,” with Mitch Miller producing in August - performed “I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas” prior to its release on The Ed Sullivan Show in October. The song gained instant fame, which led the zoo to take on donations for a hippo. 1956 – Alan Freed’s second film, Don’t Knock The Rock, with performances by Bill Haley and His Comets, Little Richard, Dave Appel and The Applejacks, The Treniers, and Alan Dale, opens in theaters. 1959 – The Ohio State University Research Center issues a report showing that rock and roll is the overwhelming favorite music of people aged 14-18.
