A very, very good friend of mine (of 44 years) passed last Thursday Dec. 26, unexpectedly, at the age of 66. Robert Phillip Horstemeier, who played a BIG part in making me the rock'n'roll nerd that I am. He called me on Christmas & we made plans to get together with a mutual friend on Friday afternoon. When I couldn't get hold of him, and he didn't return messages, I feared the worst & called friends (with a key to his house), who went over and found his body. He recently had a stroke & this may have been another. (People are leaving tributes on his Facebook page, if you are inclined to look).
There's a radio guy from Cleveland named John Gorman, and he worked for WMMS-FM, and he claims to have broken David Bowie in the States. But the truth is, that Bobby Horstemeier knew the Mercury records local guy, who would give him promo's, including Bowie's first on that label. Bobby loved it, and played it for Billy Bass, local DJ also employed at the Record Grotto (record store)...and Billy played it for John Gorman (in fairness, he did put it on the air first). But Bobby was the catalyst. That's my true story, and I'm sticking to it. (Movie buffs can hear Billy Bass as the off camera DJ in the film "Carwash") -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Diamond Headz" group.
