russell johnson is one of my favorite underrated actors for 2 reasons
(maybe more). pre-gilligan, he was a regular in medium to low budget
westerns. somehting we know but most people don't. the thing is, he took
supporting roles in these westerns & could play a good guy OR a very
convincing bad guy. i'm not saying he was jack palance in "shane", but he
was more than convincing, laid-back or evil. AFTER gilligan, he was the
star of an afterschool special from the '70s called "hewitt's just
different" which was a fairly complex & nuanced role where he was the
single dad of a teen with mental retardation. he was GREAT in this & i can
find neither hide nor hare of it on youtube etc. would love to see it
again. i would watch this again ANYTIME. in short, he was an overlooked gem
by a public who mainly knows him as only the professor on gilligan. a few
months ago i put two cowboy pictures of him up on facebook. i'll miss him.
also, on a personal note, he was in a tv series briefly called "my two
dads." one of the last few things he did. class act.
