To answer my own question about my UM surplus 8100:

Found a resistor inside 8100's power supply that had heat-cycled
loose. It was so bad that the solder pads had lifted up off the board.
One was hanging by a thread. It will be an ugly/tricky patch job. I
will probably increase the power rating of that resistor. Can you say
bad design? ;-P

The other 8100's I tested probably had the same failure, as they
seemed similarly flaky or dead.

UM surplus definitely has an attitude problem - one guy hassled me
about how little money I was spending. Should I send him the repair
bill?  ;-)
