i have a very high cpu utilization using a microdia cam.
both cores go to about 50% when using the driver with vlc or mplayer.
my buildin dell xps cam only goes to 3% even when i prepend
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so (dunno if that matters)
cam is a medion 0c45:624e.

I checked with my medion 624e cam.

I can't really compare because I have a amd64 3800+ cpu - anyway it also goes a bit up (+5-25%) but that's ok I think since a lot of image data has to be processed. Maybe your dell cam already puts out a very nice format which doesn't need converting.
