It appears the old version worked all along, I thought the mplayer
test command was actually 2 commands with the line break in the wrong
place, ie.
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=640:height=480:fps=25:device=/dev/
video0 -vo jpeg

It was confusing because mplayer appeared to be referencing v4l2 in
the init messages even when called the wrong way (and it was
displaying the image posted earlier).

Here's a very blurry screenshot, everything now looks like it's in the
right place.
