Thanks! I was hoping for a consistent 30 frames per second with no dead pixels (should I turn off autoexposure [with a v4l control program instead of source code edits]?), but I am happy because the camera was extremely inexpensive. And great Linux support! ;-) It seems buggy if the camera is unplugged while video capture is taking place, something that happens easily enough by accident while aiming the camera while it's plugged into its base. After enough tries doing this I get a zombie mplayer process and a module that can no longer be removed.
