Yeah, but here's what would be better than a ping server... a ping spider....
So here's what I want. I want net radio, in the real sense. I want to tell my browser "give me 'rock, alt-rock, artist:disturbed, artist:elliot smith, like:eminem' and add it to a smart collection which will then go out across the web and anytime it finds a XOXO playlist matching this criteria adds it to an ad hoc playlist... And when I choose to "play" this collection, it just streams the files from the respective servers. Pipe dream? Nah. We'll get there. But in terms of discovering new music that matches these smart collection prefs, microformats + indie publishing + a ping spider that works p2p betweeen the independet sites is what we need. Imagine the web is your jukebox. Websites are compilation albums. Microformats provide the track listing and resource location. MP3/OGG store the music. Your browser is your audio player. Distributed broadcasting that can't be shut down. The FCC just shit a brick. And this works for podcasting/vidcasting too.The web as TV replacement? Hells yes, on my terms.
