Welcome to the list, Angus!

Does there exist (or should there exist) a microformat appropriate to news
directories? Sample use cases might include

   http://news.google.com/
   http://news.yahoo.com/fc/world/religion/news_stories/1

or some of the pages linked off <http://news.yahoo.com/> (i.e. click the
'U.S. News & World Report' link).

Features that would typically be represented in each case include title, date, source, author, description, an image (photo) and a URL. A feature I
haven't seen (except in my own cases) but which might usefully belong
there would be associated tags, as in xFolk.

Would hAtom be appropriate for this type of use? Or is it a case that
could more usefully be handled with its own specialized microformat?
(hAtom has most of what's required, but not source - i.e. "New York Times"
- or image).

The way to answer the question "is hAtom enough?" is to try using it and see where if falls short. The only thing I see in your list above that isn't in hAtom is 'image,' which could easily just be in the content of an post.
