How much data was marked up with "dtstart", "fn" or "entry-content" as a
class name, before microformats came along?

None. Existing use of class names is not a prerequisite to a microformat. Existing published content is a prerequisite. If it's not published in HTML, we can't microformat it. But if it's already published in HTML with standard class names, we don't need to microformat it.

Peace,
