That's debatable. However, I omitted the species' vernacular name:

<abbr class="binominal" title="Solanum tuberosum">
<span class="vernacular"> [3]
Potato
</span>
<span class="variety"> [2]
'Maris Piper'
</span>
</abbr>
</span>
[1] assuming "biota" as the parent category.
[2] assuming the abbreviation "var" is not used.
[3] assuming "vernacular" and not "common" is not used.
