Yes; they're already being used on WikiTravel, which uses the same
MediaWiki software. See:

And, while it may be problematic for users to type raw code into pages
(where other, less aware, users might break it), it could easily be
added to things like the co-ordinates which appear at the top-right of
pages about places, e.g.:

for Persondata:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Persondata>
and, eventually, to add "species" markup to Taxoboxes:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Taxobox>
