Why aren't you just using a mailto?

I suspect because he wants people to be directed to a page where they can get in touch, instead.

Perhaps he wants to be a sneaky bastard (tm) and take people to a different version of the website (perhaps a wrapper) while allowing the real website name to be used by people and tools too.

Perhaps he just wants to take people to a form where people can send him a message rather than put his email address on any page where it could be picked up by spambots.

I think this would be quite common.
I prefer not to put email addresses on web pages (or I'll try to obfuscate them somehow) for the same reason.

What if I want to put a contact form url in there AND (seperately) a website url? If I use class="url" for both how would a parser know which is which?
