I think Mozilla Corporation (the main backers of Firefox) have a
special relation with Google.

So, it's probably not so much of an issue.

sounds nice but wouldn't Google's requirement for an API key make this
difficult?

A single point could be shown by just creating a link to Google Maps but to
show multiple points would probably mean creating a page in the browser
using the Google Maps API.
(Microsoft's map API might be easier - they seem to have less red tape
associated with showing a map and putting stuff on it)
