With Microformats, dates are in ISO 8601 format. ISO 8601 already  
allows for years without months or days. e.g.

        <span class="bday">1980</span>

And indeed with years and months, but no days:

        <span class="bday">1980-06</span>

Most microformat parsers already support these, so no need to go  
inventing some non-ISO format. ISO 8601 also offers a way of  
specifying months and days without a year:

        <span class="bday">--06-01</span>

Though this doesn't have such wide support.
