The two names do not mean the same thing. "item" means "a thing" "track" (for example) names that thing, and distinguishes it from other things.

And regardless of the number of people, if you can point to a principle supporting your position, your position is stronger. Science is not a democracy.

Nether is science the act of citing made-up principles.
