I am all for simpicity, but one thing that bugs me about AHAH is that the payload is usually an HTML fragment, not a complete document.
Then make the payload a complete document!

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

</head>
<body>
<div>
<p>Check out my awesome content</p>
</div>
</body>
</html>
The body node itself isn't appended to the DOM via AHAH -- only it's
children.
Has anybody tackled this issue?
See above :)
