A couple of weeks ago in church we were singing the old ( ~780 years)
classic Christian Hymn "All Creatures of Our God and King", by St
Francis of Assisi. I know there are those who believe that I have an
unhealthy obsession with renewable energy, but as I sang, the old Hymn
seemed to me an enumeration of RE power sources with a historical
basis. I doubt that was by design, still I found it entertaining to
consider.

All creatures of our God and King,
Lift up your voice and with us sing
Alleluia, Alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam,
O praise Him, Alleluia!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,
Ye lights of evening, find a voice!
O praise Him, Alleluia!

Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
Make music for thy Lord to hear,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou fire so masterful and bright,
That givest man both warmth and light.
O praise Him, Alleluia!

Dear mother earth, who day by day
Unfoldest blessings on our way,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Let all things their Creator bless,
And worship Him in humbleness,
O praise Him! Alleluia!

Francis of Assisi, circa 1225
(Cantico di fratre sole, Song of Brother Sun)
Translated to English by William H. Draper, ca 1919
