Marc:

It is possible that Eng. Mauricio Gnecco (Colombia) have the right answer because he
have experience in river flow turbines (Garman, and others), but for less power. Other
source of information is ITDG www.itdg.org

  Subject: [microhydro] Stream turbine needed

"Good day, I have a large volume of water (20000cubic Metre per sec @ 6
  Knots) with little or
no head. Is there any type of Hydro Power that I can utilise or install
  without having to
effect too much change or very little environmental damage? We are in a
  game park & an
ecologically perfect location. We require around 60 KW. Diesel power is
  an option, but not a
good one. We know of installed micro power systems in the past, but have
  no knowledge of any
suppliers. Can or could you assist please? What I have seen further
  upstream (about
  580Miles) is a 75KVA 220VAC turbine suspended 2metres from the bottom
  of two floating
pontoons anchored offshore in the river's flow & would like to acquire a
  similar set-up. The
distance from the shore to a river bottom depth (at our camp) of around
  6 metres is only 4
or 5 metres into the river & the flow is in excess of 20000Cu Metres per
  sec, but the river
only falls approx 1metre in 900metres."

If your river's bottom profile and its boat traffic allow it, a stream
turbine like the one you saw makes good sense. With anything anchored in
a swift stream, dbris are also a concern. The best would be to contact
those folk upstream of you and learn as much as you can about their
operating experience, and if that is good contact the manufacturer of
  their rig.
