There is a device called the Heat Generator that directly produces
heat by squeezing air. This is driven by direct mechanical power.
Plans by Reinhold Metzler for this can be found in the Appropriate
Technology Sourcebook by Vita.
We would be very interested to hear of any actual accounts of this
device in use.
