There was a famous Scientist who during his honeymoon trip in the Alps, 
measured the temperature of waterfalls at the top and bottom. This confirmed 
that 
there was a temperature increase as potential energy was converted into kinetic 
energy but some energy was lost in friction.  He went on to calculate the 
constants for work turning into heat. I think it must have been JOULE.
