My brother arranged a tour for me today to see a new 511 kW Gilkes
turgo installation in a water treatment facility. It has been online
since October 2004, and is a very nice system. It has 953 feet of
static head, a 12 inch runner with a single spear valve nozzle. Full
flow is 11.8 cfs (ft^3/sec) at a net head of 635 feet. The control
system is quite sophisticated with a GE protection relay and Allen
Bradley PLC.

Anyway, I noticed the generator brand was WEG, so I looked that up on
the net. They produce a wide range of hydro generators but don't show
any of their hydro generators online. The do show a large list of
clearance and discontinued motors at highly discounted prices. This
is a very large manufacturer located in Brazil. If you are looking
for a motor of any size, check the surplus list. It will take some
work as only part numbers, list and discount prices are given, not
hp, rpm, voltage, etc. but the list is extensive enough it might be
worth decoding the part number scheme. Or, you could find what motor
is close on their normal motor selector then search the clearance
list for similar part numbers & list prices. I think the clearance
list is an ongoing feature of this web site.
