This afternoon I visited a site in Devon England, on the land of a friend of mine, with an old mine leat. We measured the flow as 20 litres/sec and the local river is about 12m below the leat.
I calculate a theoretical 2 kW maximum available (assuming no losses). Could you please advise the type of installation that we should consider to generate non-grid connected power. The most obvious load is a domestic cooker of the AGA type which is an electric storage type of cooker with massive thermal capacity. Is it possible to locate a turbine/generator on the leat at the top of the hill - i.e. discharging through a filled pipe to the river (suction mode ??) The owner would like to use this site as an opportunity to learn about microhydro - is this a good application for a pump to be run as a generator ? Many thanks in advance for your comments.
