my job was lead design for the generator. the field used to be excited via a rotating exciter, however, now a static exciter is used the rotating exciter was a small generator fixed on the shaft above the main generator and this fed the DC required for the poles from a small amount of power supplied to the generator. Modern power electronics has improved alot so these and their upkeep are no longer required steve
