If all anyone ever did was explore what is "practical" this would be a very very boring world. There is nothing wrong with pursuing a dream as long as the risks are assessed properly. We should be encouraging a wide diversity of projects, not just the ones using the same old conventional wisdom and off-the-shelf technology. That path leads only to engineering text-books and stagnation.
